May 1977: I'm only nine years old, not ten yet, and I was getting my official baseball team picture taken for the Creve Coeur Athletic Association. I knew this would be the photo that would be on my baseball card, if I was going to be on a baseball card, so I wanted to look tough, like I could hit .380, drive 136 runners in, and knock 50 homeruns out of the park. I also did a lot of spitting that summer, like a real baseball player, until my great-grandfather, made me chew some real tobacco and taught me that spitting was not very cool. |
